Your tank gauge is located on the top of the tank, usually under a lid or hood which can be lifted up to view the gauge. Look for a gauge dial with numbers from 5 to 95. The numbers indicate the percentage of propane in the tank. When the level reaches to 30%, please schedule a delivery online or call customer service.
Automatic Delivery is a free service where AmeriGas estimates your tank level and automatically schedules your deliveries. We forecast your demand based on the weather and your appliances, ensuring that you won't run out of gas. In normal use situations, there's typically no need to check your tank gauge and call for deliveries when you are an Automatic Delivery customer. While there is no additional charge to be an Automatic Delivery customer, you may need to meet credit terms.
As a Will Call customer you must monitor the level of propane in your tank and call to schedule a delivery whenever you are ready, or when the percentage falls to 30% to avoid running out of gas.
Learn more about your Delivery Options.
Yes, within 10%. Our system compensates for variations based on usage, the propane appliances in your home, combined with current weather patterns, to ensure timely deliveries are made. If you are an automatic delivery customer and notice a discrepancy and are not in danger of running out of propane, you may update your actual percentage yourself, within your MyAmeriGas online account. The following are safety tips related to connecting propane appliances. AmeriGas has trained professionals who can install appliances and check connectors. Call customer service to schedule an installation or maintenance appointment.
- PROPERLY INSTALL AND MAINTAIN CONNECTORS. The final section of the system that brings gas to your appliances is the appliance connector. It is important that all appliance connectors are properly inspected, installed, and maintained by a qualified service technician.
- HAVE CONNECTORS CHECKED WHEN MOVING OR REPLACING APPLIANCES. Connectors can wear out from too much moving, bending, or corrosion. Connectors should be checked by a qualified service technician whenever the appliance is replaced or moved from its location.
- USE ONLY APPROVED APPLIANCE CONNECTORS. Make sure that all connectors and gas piping/tubing that bring propane to your appliances are installed by a qualified service technician and approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
- APPLIANCE CONNECTORS MAY NOT be run through walls, partitions, cabinets, etc.
- HAVE OLDER APPLIANCE CONNECTORS INSPECTED. Over time, some types of appliance connectors can crack or break, resulting in a serious gas leak and the possibility of fire or explosion. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has warned that certain types of older connectors are extremely dangerous. If you have an appliance that is more than 20 years old, have a qualified service technician inspect the connectors to be sure they are safe and meet current safety-code requirements.
- MOVEABLE APPLIANCES WITH CASTERS must be limited by a restraining device to prevent movement beyond the length of the propane connector in accordance with the connector manufacturer’s recommendations.
- USE CAUTION WHEN MOVING AN APPLIANCE YOURSELF to check the connector; this might damage the connector and create a leak.

Our specially-trained agents are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to answer your questions and respond to your concerns. In addition to our safety inspections, we always encourage our customers to review Propane Safety information available on our commercial propane safety support page.
Message frequency will vary per customer, but customers typically will not receive more than one message a week or four messages a month. Customers will not receive back to back messages and messages during a black out window from 9PM-9AM local time. Please note text message notifications are only available to residential customers at this time.

If the emergency you're having is that you are running low on propane and are concerned you will run out, or that you've used more propane than you were forecasted to use, please call customer service at 1-800-263-7442 to inquire about expedited delivery.
If you smell gas or are experiencing signs of a gas leak immediately exit the premises and contact 800-805-0659 or 9-1-1 for immediate assistance. All gas leaks potentially pose a serious threat.
If the suspected leak is coming from a portable propane tank or grill tank, and it is safe to do so, turn off the cylinder valve, turning it to the right (clockwise). If you are unable to turn off the valve, immediately leave the area and dial 911 or call your local fire department. Before you use the grill again, have a qualified service technician inspect your grill and cylinder. It's best to move away from the source of the leak, and to ensure pets and people are not at close range. You can also do what's called a "bubble test" to check for leaks on a grill tank.
Note: It is dangerous to touch propane as it will burn.
MAINTENANCE IS IMPORTANT. All appliances using propane must be properly maintained in order to operate safely, properly, and efficiently.
LEAVE IT TO THE EXPERTS. Only a qualified service technician has the proper training to install, service, maintain, and repair your appliances. Make sure you have a qualified service technician install and service your appliances.
ANNUAL INSPECTION IS IMPORTANT. Contact a qualified service technician to perform an appliance inspection.
BE SURE YOUR APPLIANCES CAN "BREATHE" PROPERLY. Regularly check the vents of your appliances to be sure that flue gases can flow easily to the outdoors. Insects, birds, and small animals sometimes build nests in vent pipes. Other obstructions such as snow or ice may also occur. If you see evidence of this, call a qualified service technician. Also, clear the area around your appliance to be sure plenty of air can reach the burner for proper combustion. Note: Not all propane appliances require venting.
NEVER store combustible materials near appliances.
WATCH FOR YELLOW FLAMES OR SOOT BUILD-UP. When appliances are operating properly, propane burns with a blue flame. If you see yellow flames, or notice significant amounts of soot on any equipment, the gas may not be burning completely. This can create carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas. Contact a qualified service technician if any of the above conditions occur.
Early Access is a limited launch of our new AmeriGas Business website with availability initially for select customers. AmeriGas Business is currently available only by invitation but is expected to expand to more customers in the near future! Stay tuned.

That’s why it is important for you to know exactly where your gas lines are located and to avoid digging in that area. If you are an AmeriGas customer and your home or business improvements include landscaping or exterior home improvement work, please contact us before you start digging. We will work with you to locate your propane gas lines and ensure that your renovations or grounds maintenance do not put your safety, or the safety of others, at risk.

We import our propane into Washington state from several different sources—not all of which are subject to the Cap and Invest Tax —which is why the amount of Cap and Invest that is assessed to our customers may be different than some other suppliers. Our per-gallon rate represents the average per-gallon Cap and Invest cost that we’ve incurred as of the present day. It’s important to note that that figure could move up or down depending on several factors.
If you need further assistance please refer to the Washington Cap & Trade website or email us at WaCapInvest@AmeriGas.com.
Informing customers about cylinder and container safety is an important responsibility for the propane dispenser operator. Operators should make sure that all customers understand how to transport cylinders safely. Important safety tips for your customers include:
- Always transport and store a cylinder in a secure and upright position so it will not fall, shift, or roll
- Never keep a filled cylinder inside a hot vehicle
- Always proceed directly to your destination and immediately remove the cylinder from your vehicle
Static Discharge Prevention Quick Tips
All employees should be aware of the potential danger of unwanted static electricity at the dispensing location. In the right conditions static discharge or spark may cause the ignition of some fuels, including gasoline and propane. In order to reduce the risk of ignition from static discharge, identify where Static Discharge Control Areas are and where static electricity may be coming from. This is typically any area where propane vapor may be present.
If you are working in or near a Static Discharge Control Area, there are a few simple measures you can take to limit your chances of producing a static spark:
- Wear static-safe footwear or temporary foot grounders
- Wear cotton and cotton blends as they will generate less static electricity than most synthetics and polyester materials
- Never put on or remove garments inside a Static Discharge Control Area
- Remove all plastics and other synthetic materials from the area
- Make sure all your equipment is properly grounded
- Limit access to the area to only those people necessary to conduct normal business activities
Filling Cylinders - Safety Tips
Before filling a cylinder, make sure you are aware of the following information regarding safety and handling procedures:
- Know your facility's fire prevention and emergency evacuation plans, including where and how to operate emergency shutdown and pump controls. Locate the nearest fire extinguishers and make sure they are in proper working condition. Only use fire extinguishers to create an escape route—not to fight a propane fire. The only safe way to extinguish a propane fire is by stopping the flow of propane.
- Before operating a filling station, ensure there are no ignition sources within 25 feet of the points of transfer, or metal-working operations including grinding, oxygen-fuel gas cutting, brazing, soldering, or welding within 35 feet.
- Be sure that valves are protected properly with a valve cap or protective collar, and always use proper cylinder handling techniques. The Overfilling Prevention Device (OPD) should never be used for determining if a cylinder is full. The OPD will not always stop the flow of propane into the cylinder at the proper fill amount.
- When filling a cylinder, always follow the training materials provided to you by your Propane provider, and please contact your Propane provider if you require replacement training materials.
- Never fill a cylinder without wearing all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
- Never allow your employee or anyone else to operate the dispenser without first ensuring that they have been properly trained in safely operating the dispenser and inspecting and filling cylinders.
- Never allow customers, spectators, or individuals not involved in the dispensing process within 10’ of the point of transfer. This is the point where the cylinder connects to the hose.

Note: It is dangerous to touch propane as it will burn.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES try to modify or repair valves, regulators, connectors, controls, or other appliance and cylinder/tank parts. Doing so creates the risk of a gas leak.
CALL AN EXPERT. If you are unable to operate any part of your propane system, or if you think an appliance or other device is not operating properly, call your propane retailer or a qualified service technician. They can inspect, adjust, repair, or replace any part of your propane system.
YOUR PROPANE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED FOR SAFETY. Propane cylinders, tanks, and appliances incorporate special components (such as valves, connectors, controls, burners, and pilot lights) to keep them safe for use. Damaging these components can cause gas leaks.

In extreme heat, which often accompanies drought conditions, make sure the 10 foot radius around your propane tank and your propane grill is clear of flammable materials. Remove any debris that is combustible or easily ignited, including leaves, brush, any vegetation, and rags.
Floods can move, shift, or damage gas lines and tanks. A large propane tank can become dislodged from its service line and float away, striking trees, vehicles, or other heavy objects along its path. Water and debris can find their way inside regulators and controls, causing potential safety issues. Fallen trees and power lines can create extra safety concerns. If you have any doubts about your safety, leave the area immediately, alert AmeriGas or your utility company, and have your property inspected by a qualified building inspector or structural engineer before re-entering.
High winds and hail—often accompanying hurricanes, tornadoes, and winter storms—can move, shift, or damage gas lines and tanks. If your propane tank becomes dislodged from its service line, it’s likely to be leaking gas out into the surrounding area. A spark from a fallen power line or other ignition source could pose a danger to anyone nearby. Debris and water can find their way inside regulators and controls, causing potential safety issues. If you have any doubts about your safety, leave the area immediately, alert AmeriGas or your utility company, and have your property inspected by a qualified building inspector or structural engineer before re-entering.

How long does the installation take?
The installation of your tank monitor will take place in one day with the actual process taking less than 15 minutes. As long as we have access to your tank, you do not need to be present for the installation of the monitor on your tank.
What if my tank is within a locked, secure area of my yard?
At the time of installation, Otodata’s technicians will knock at your dock, introduce themselves, and provide the details of the installation/service appointment. If you have any special access instructions, please provide them that information.
Where do you install the tank monitor?
The tank monitor is an attachment to the top of your existing tank. If your tank is below ground and the lid or dome is metal, the monitor may be installed on top of the top or lid. When the dome or lid is plastic, the monitor may be installed out of sight below the dome or lid.

Propane has a strong, unpleasant smell like rotten eggs. Propane manufacturers add the smell deliberately to help alert customers to propane leaks, which can create a safety hazard.
It may be hard for some people to smell propane for the following reasons:
- They have a cold, allergies, sinus congestion, or another medical condition.
- Their sense of smell is reduced due to use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs.
- Tobacco smoke, cooking odors, and other strong odors can mask the smell of propane.
- As people age, their sense of smell can become less sensitive.
If the smell of propane is present in the air over a period of time, "odor fatigue" can occur. The nose "gets tired," and a person no longer smells the propane odor. The propane smell may not be strong enough to wake up someone who is sleeping. The propane smell may be in a location (basement or attic) where it is not detected by people in other areas of the building. A phenomenon called "odor loss" can occur-an unintended reduction in the concentration of the odor of propane.
The best way to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is to have a qualified service technician check your appliances and venting systems regularly.
Year-round, keep an eye out to make sure:
- Your chimneys, flues, and vents are free of debris, including leaves, animal nests, snow and ice, and other obstructions
- You're following the manufacturer's instructions for the placement and use of vent-free appliances, including fireplaces and logs
- You have a functioning, UL-listed carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home
- Your chimney flue damper is always open when you use your fireplace
NEVER:
Use a gas oven or range-top burners to provide space heating.
Use outdoor portable heaters inside, unless they are designed and approved for indoor use.
Use a barbecue grill (propane or charcoal) indoors for cooking or heating.
Run a propane fueled engine (such as your lawn mower, generator, or snow blower) in enclosed areas, including your garage.
If you smell gas or are experiencing signs of a gas leak immediately exit the premises and contact 800-805-0659 or 9-1-1 for immediate assistance. All gas leaks potentially pose a serious threat.

Across the country, landscape contractors and grounds managers are discovering the competitive advantages of mowing with propane. Propane reduces harmful carbon emissions compared with conventional fuels. In many places, propane mowers can be used on ozone action days when other mowers can't. With its closed fuel system, propane saves money and protects the environment by virtually eliminating costly, harmful spills and by dramatically reducing fuel theft. Landscape contractors who have switched to propane report immediate cost savings.
