Grilled Gyros Recipe

Take your tailgate from zero to gyro with these tasty treats. Pro tip – get your steak marinating the night before to achieve intense flavor and tender meat. You can also make the Tzatziki sauce ahead of time, to cut down on game day prep, so you can spend more time cheering on your team.

INGREDIENTS

Marinated Steak Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. flank steak
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar
  • ½ tbsp. Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp. fresh mint, chopped
  • 1 tsp. dried oregano

Tzatziki Sauce Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • ½ cup cucumber, chopped
  • 2 tbsp. fresh dill, chopped
  • 2 tbsp. fresh mint, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt

Gyro Ingredients:

  • ½ cucumber, sliced and halved
  • ½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • ½ yellow pepper, sliced
  • ½ onion, sliced
  • 4 pita breads
  • Cilantro to garnish
 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Combine steak marinade ingredients in a large bowl, mixing well, then add steak to the marinade making sure to coat in the mixture. Marinate from one hour to overnight.
  2. Preheat grill to high, and then grill steak 5-7 minutes per side based on your preferred temperature, basting in marinade as you grill. When steak is done, remove from grill and allow to rest a few minutes, then slice into strips against the grain.
  3. While steak is grilling, combine all Tzatziki sauce ingredients in a bowl. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  4. Assemble gyros with steak, sliced cucumber, tomatoes, yellow peppers, onions and tzatziki sauce on a warm pita.
  5. Garnish with cilantro and dig in!
